Indian Institute of Technology Patna is one of the new IITs established by an act of parliament on August 06, 2008. It runs from its transit campus in Patliputra Colony, Patna
Patna which was known as Patliputra has been a center of knowledge since long has been attracting visitors and scholars from many parts of the world such as China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Sri Lanka, among others. This has been a land of visionaries. Some of the historical legends from this region include Lord Gautam Buddha, Lord Mahavir, Guru Gobind Singh, the famous astronomer Aryabhata and the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering Departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
· Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Medical Sciences/ Veterinary Sciences/ Pharmacy in a relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
· Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Medical Sciences (from other than IITs) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
Selection:-
The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test or/ and interview, based on performance in GATE/NET, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.
Regular:-
A student in this category works full-time for his/her Ph.D. degree. He/She receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency, such as NBHM, DBT, etc. Upper age limit: 28 years (Junior Research Fellow). Self-Financed:-
A student in this category works full-time or part-time towards the Ph.D. Programme. He/She must have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. He/She must have at qualified in NET (LS) or GATE in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.
Project Staff:-
This category refers to a student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted to the Ph.D. Programme to work on a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his/her Ph.D. Programme, his/her category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless he/she is granted an assistantship/fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (Form-II) must be attached with the application.
Part-Time:-
A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Patna), who pursues the Ph.D. Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form-III) must be enclosed at the time of application. He/She must have at qualified in NET (including LS) or GATE in the respective field. The minimum residential requirement is one or two semesters depending on the completion of mandatory course work.
External:-
This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the Ph.D. degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which he/she is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form-IV) must be enclosed at the time of application.
Note: The word `Form used under this section refers to the forms as specified in Pages 4 to 6 of the Application Form for Admission to Ph.D. Programme.
Relaxation for SC/ST Candidates:

The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which he/she is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form-III) must be enclosed at the time of application.
Note: The word `Form’ used under this section refers to the forms as specified in Pages 4 to 6 of the Application Form for Admission to PhD Programme.
Relaxation for SC/ST Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ ST applicants.
Reservations: The reservation of seats in admissions for SC, ST, OBC categories and for Persons with Disability (PD) will be as per Government of India rules. OBC (Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per formats as indicated at Annexures-I and II. More Details click here…….

Application Procedure for PhD (Linguistics) in Indian Institute of Technology, IIT, Patna
Prescribed application form can be downloaded here (DOC format, PDF format).
Application form can also be obtained from the Assistant Registrar, Indian Institute of Technology Patna, Patliputra Colony, Patna – 800 013, Bihar, on or before 08-04-2009 by ordinary post or in person. To receive application forms by ordinary post, send a request along with a self-addressed, Rs.5/- stamped envelope (24cm x 15cm size). Request for form must be sent in an envelope super-scribed with ‘Request for PhD Application form’.
Filled in application forms complete with copies of mark sheets/certificates and other testimonials and a Demand Draft for Rs.150/- for General/ OBC candidates and Rs.75/- for SC/ST/PD candidates drawn in any nationalized bank and payable at Patna in favour of IIT Patna should be sent to the Assistant Registrar, Indian Institute of Technology Patna, Patliputra Colony, Patna – 800 013, Bihar, to reach on or before 15 April 2009. The words “Application for PhD admission in the Department of _________” should be written on the top of the envelope for sending the completed form.
Candidates applying for more than one department should submit a separate application for each department.
Selection: The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test or/ and interview, based on performance in GATE/NET, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.
