Bengal Engineering and Science University, BESU, Shibpur

The Bengal Engineering and Science University (Besu) was finally conferred with the status of Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) with the passing of the bill in the Rajya Shabha. This newly acquired status that comes after a wait of 9 years will make BESU attain Institute of National Importance (INI) tag, first in the country.

Attaining the IIEST tag, the engineering institute can now increase the intake of students in phases over the next five years. Integrated courses in which a student enrolling with B.Tech can complete M.Tech in continuation can also be started. M.Tech students will again get the opportunity of completing Phd before parting with the institution.

The syllabus may receive upgradation in the standards of IIT. Besu may start taking students from IITJEE merit list from the next academic session.

The institute can now receive financial assistance from the Centre in the form of special grants to build new laboratories, auditoriums and residential apartments for faculty members.  Salary of the faculty members will also receive hike with additional pay packages, city allowance and reimbursements.
