The National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) was established on July 2, 1999 by merging the Central JALMA Institute for Leprosy (CJIL Field Unit), Avadi with the Institute for Research in Medical Statistics (IRMS), Chennai. The broad objectives of the Institute cover Development of human resources in epidemiology and bio-statistics, Networking of the various ICMR and non-ICMR Institutes at the national level for epidemiological purposes, and Consultancy.
The Institute has the distinction of being the WHO Collaborating Centre for Leprosy Research and Epidemiology and identified as a Technical Resource Group for Epidemiology of HIV by National AIDS Control Organization.
The Institute carries out a variety of research activities which include areas such as interventional studies, disease modeling, health systems research, evaluation of health schemes and disease control programmes, issues of statistical methodology, epidemiological investigations and clinical trials of traditional remedies.
The Institute is recognized by the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (Deemed University), Thiruvananthapuram for the 2-year Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP-INDIA) leading to Master of Applied Epidemiology (MAE) degree. The Institute has been conducting training programmes annually in bio-statistics, controlled clinical trials and basic epidemiology for medical doctors, PG medical students and para-medical workers. It also conducts WHO-SEARO 10 day regional workshops on Surveillance, Epidemic preparedness and Response periodically.

The Institute has expertise in the areas of bio-statistics, epidemiology, epidemiology of communicable diseases namely leprosy, tuberculosis and other diseases, controlled clinical trials, maternal and child health, health surveys, data processing etc. The Institute has a good library, a well equipped computing facility and a field practice area covering well characterized 5,00,000 population.
Candidates fulfilling the following criteria are eligible to apply for the course:
(i) M.B.B.S. degree recognized by Medical Council of India
(ii) (a) Working in public health, preferably regularized and permanent employees of State or Central Government Department or Medical institutions;
(b) Private (NonGovernment) candidates worked / working in public health
(iii) Three years experience in public health related activities
(iv) Age up to 45 years as on the date mentioned in the admission form. Departmental candidates from ICMR institutions will be granted age relaxation of 5 years. SC/ST/OBC/PH candidates will be eligible for age relaxation as per Government of India rules
Selection process
Selection Committee constituted by SCTIMST and NIE will select the candidates based on the following:
· Review of the application form
· Written test (if necessary)
· Personal interview at NIE, Chennail be cancelled
Application Fee: Applications should be submitted along with the application fee of Rs.600/= (Rupees Six hundred only) by means of a Demand Draft drawn on any nationalized bank in favour of “Director, NIE” payable at Chennai. Applications without the application fee will not be considered.
Submission of application: Duly filled in prescribed Application Form with necessary enclosures should be sent to the following address, superscribing “Application for MPH” on top of the cover.

Candidates fulfilling the following criteria are eligible to apply for the course:

· Working in public health, preferably in State or Central Government Department or in Medical institutions, sponsored on deputation for two year on full-time basis
· Three years experience in public health related activities
· Age up to 40 years as on 1.7.2015. May be relaxed up to 5 years for deserving candidates. Age relaxable for SC/ST/OBC candidates as per Government of India rules. Age-limit relaxable for ICMR candidates.
Course Fee
There is no course fee for the candidates sponsored by the State/Central Government Departments/Armed forces. For the non-sponsored government/private candidates and the sponsored candidates from private institutions, the course fee is Rs.1, 00,000/- (Rupees One lakh only) (non-refundable), payable at the rate of Rs.50, 000/= (Rupees Fifty thousand only) per year, at the beginning of each academic year.
