Minimum Educational Qualifications for Ph.D.:

1.1. For Regular Research Scholars:

Ph.D in Management:

a) Master’s degree or 2 year PG Diploma in a relevant discipline, and a Bachelor’s degree with a good academic record (minimum five years of undergraduate and postgraduate education) OR Five year integrated master’s degree / dual degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline with a good academic record AND

Qualifying in national level examinations such as GATE/CAT/UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF or equivalent OR

International level post graduate admission examination such as GMAT/GRE (Non-HTRA) applicable to OCI/NRI/Foreign Nationals.

b) Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology with a good academic record or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering / Technology in a relevant discipline.

c) Candidates with MBA or 2 year PG diploma from Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI) with CGPA of 8 and above are exempted from qualifying in National level examinations.

Candidates who have qualified for the award of Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/ Bachelor of Science (Research) of 4 year duration with exceptionally good academic record in an eligible discipline will be considered for Direct Ph.D. Programme in various Engineering/Sciences/Humanities & Social Sciences/Management stream as a Regular scholar subject to fulfilling any one of following criteria:

·          a B.Tech. degree holder of Centrally Funded Technical Institute with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 on a 10.0 point scale or with a valid GATE score.

·          a BS (Research) 4 year degree holder of Centrally Funded Technical Institute with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 on a 10.0 point scale or with a valid GATE score.

·          a Bachelor’s degree holder in Engineering/Technology with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 on a 10.0 point scale or equivalent from any other University and having a valid GATE score.

·          a Bachelor’s degree holder in Engineering/Technology with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 on a 10.0 point scale or equivalent from any other University and working in a reputed R & D organization & having a proven research record (External Category).

·          a MBBS/BDS degree holder with minimum first class and valid NEET PG qualifying score will be eligible to apply for direct Ph.D. programme under HTRA category in Engineering Design department. If the candidate meets the above degree requirement but doesn't possess valid NEET PG qualifying score then they can apply under NHTRA category (Parttime / External / Project) to the same department.

·          Candidates possessing M.Sc (Maths) or M.Sc. (Computer Science) from CFTI or a highly recognized institute such as Indian Statistical Institute and Chennai Mathematical Institute with the minimum CGPA of 8.0 on 10.0 scale and valid GATE (Maths) or GATE (CS) score can apply under HTRA category in Computer Science & Engineering department.

·          Candidates with B.E/B.Tech/B.S (4 year) admitted directly to Ph.D. programme will be joining a two-degree (M.S+Ph.D) programme in Engineering/Management stream except Sciences/Humanities & Social Sciences stream.

For Permanent Institute Staff members / Research Scholars under QIP / Research Scholars under External Registration / Research Scholars under Part-time Registration:

For Research Scholars in the above categories, the minimum educational qualifications are the same as prescribed for Regular Research Scholars in 5.1.1 for admission to the Ph.D. Programme in the respective categories.

However, valid GATE score or CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF/NET or equivalent qualification as applicable for Regular research scholars may not be required in these cases.

One year PG programme from Accredited Universities is considered as one of the eligibility criteria for admission to Ph.D. at IIT Madras. Following are the conditions:

1) The Selection committee may consider the applicant for direct Ph.D., if the candidate found suitable and meet eligibility requirements.

2) Courses completed already in one year PG programme may be considered by the Doctoral Committee towards course requirement for Direct Ph.D.

3) The scholar will be eligible for HTRA, if they have valid GATE score (equivalent to Direct Ph.D. scholars)

Ph.D. and Direct Admission to M.S. + Ph.D. in Inter Disciplinary Research (IDRP) The Interdisciplinary Research Programme (IDRP) was introduced with the aim of creating a platform for encouraging research scholars from any relevant background to perform research in certain specialised areas without the restrictive academic boundaries of departments. Faculty members of two inter related departments of IIT Madras will define interdisciplinary research projects. Eligibility for those who cleared class 12 or equivalent in 2019 or earlier:

·          The candidate must have studied Mathematics and English in class 10.

·          They should have cleared class 12 or equivalent in 2019 or earlier. View list of accepted class 12 equivalents.

·          No additional eligibility required to apply for the qualifier process or join the foundational courses after clearing the qualifying exam.

Eligibility for those who cleared class 12 or equivalent in 2020 or 2021:

·          The candidate must have studied Mathematics and English in class 10.

·          They should have cleared class 12 or equivalent in 2020 or 2021. View list of accepted class 12 equivalents.

·          The candidate should be:

o    currently enrolled / previously enrolled in any Bachelor’s Degree program in campus mode OR

o    completed 1 year (campus mode only) diploma OR

o    completed CA Inter

Note: That applicants who cleared class 12 or equivalent in 2020 or 2021 may apply for the qualifier process with eligibility criteria 1 & 2 alone, but will be required to fulfil criterion 3 to join the foundational courses after clearing the qualifying exam.

Qualifier Process

·          All applicants for the Degree Program will have to go through the Qualifier Process.

·          They will get access to 4 weeks of content for the four foundational level courses – English I, Mathematics for Data Science I, Statistics for Data Science I and Computational Thinking.

·          Video content of 2 – 3 hours duration will be released for each course on a weekly basis.

·          Along with the content, every week will also include an assignment for each course that needs to be completed and submitted online within the given deadline.

·          Support for the learners is available through the discussion forum and live interactive sessions that will be conducted at regular intervals.

For Regular Research Scholars:

Ph.D. in Engineering:

a) Candidates with a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record / Master’s degree by Research in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record / 5 Year Dual Degree in Engineering or 5 Year BS+MS Dual degree from Centrally Funded Technical Institute with a good academic record.

b) 2 Year M.Sc. from IITs (entry through JAM) with 8.0 and above are exempted from qualifying in National Level Examinations.

c) Candidates with Master’s degree in Sciences with a good academic record and of exceptional merit are eligible, for the relevant Engineering disciplines (as decided by admitting departments). Candidates must have a valid GATE score or UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF or equivalent qualification in the relevant area tenable for the year of registration.

In the case of candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology AND possess more than 5 years relevant work experience after the Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology, the requirement of a test score may be waived by the Selection Committee.

Ph.D. in Sciences:

1.     Master’s degree in Sciences with a good academic record and having a valid GATE score or UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF/NBHM/INSPIRE or equivalent qualification tenable for the current year in the relevant area.

2.     Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or 5 Year BS+MS Dual degree/ 5 Year Integrated degree from Centrally Funded Technical Institute are eligible with a good academic record.

3.     2 Year M.Sc. from IITs (entry through JAM) with 8.0 and above are exempted from qualifying in National level examinations.

4.    Students who get more than 8.0 CGPA in M.Sc. in Science Departments of IIT Madras can be admitted directly to their Ph.D programme in Sciences with interview at departmental level.

Ph.D. in Humanities and Social Sciences:

a) (i) Master’s degree / dual degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline AND Qualifying UGC – NET  or JRF / CSIR-JRF / GATE Score or equivalent qualification tenable for the current year in the  relevant area or international level post graduate admission examination such as GRE  (Non-HTRA).

OR

(ii) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or 5 Year BS+MS Dual degree/ 5 Year Integrated degree from Centrally Funded Technical Institute with a good academic record.

b) At least 3 years of experience in research/industry in lieu of the above examination. (This clause is applicable only for Non-HTRA candidates)

Ph.D in Management:

Masters degree or 2 year PG Diploma in a relevant discipline, and a Bachelor’s degree with a good academic record (minimum five years of undergraduate and postgraduate education) OR Five year integrated master’s degree / dual degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline with a good academic record

AND

Qualifying in national level examinations such as GATE/CAT/UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF or equivalent or international level post graduate admission examination such as GMAT/GRE (Non-HTRA).

OR

At least 5 years of managerial experience in lieu of the above examination. (This clause is applicable for Non-HTRA candidates only) Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology with a good academic record or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering / Technology in a relevant discipline are exempted from qualifying in National level examinations. Candidates with MBA or 2 year PG diploma from Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI) with CGPA of 8 and above are exempted from qualifying in National level examinations.

Candidates who have qualified for the award of Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/ Bachelor of Science (Research) of 4 year duration with exceptionally good academic record in an eligible discipline will be considered for Direct Ph.D. Programme in various Engineering/Sciences/Humanities & Social Sciences/Management stream as a Regular scholar subject to fulfilling any one of following criteria :

·          You are required to submit the application ONLINE. No Downloadable Forms will be available. After filling the form, you are advised to take a printout of your application and keep the same for your record.

·          GN/EWS/OBC-NCL Male candidates: Rs.100/-

·          GN/EWS/OBC-NCL Female candidates: Rs.50/-

·          SC/ST and PwD candidates: Rs.50/-

Candidates applying for HSEE-2020 must have passed any one of the following qualifying examinations for the first time in 2019 or should be appearing in 2020.

•      The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by a Central or State Board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (www.aiuweb.org).

•      Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a Board or University recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.

•      Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy.

•      Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.

•      Any Public School, Board or University examination in India or in a foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities.

•      H.S.C. vocational examination.

•      Class XII skill courses of CBSE.

•      General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.

•      High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

Candidates who have completed Class XII (or equivalent) examination outside India or from a Board not specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities to the effect that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination.

In case the Class XII examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination earlier.

Percentage of Marks in Qualifying Examination

Candidates belonging to the General, GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL category must secure a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination. Candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD categories must secure a minimum of 55% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination. Where only letter grades are mentioned in the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of joining. In case the candidate does not provide such a certificate, the decision of the HSEE admission committee regarding his/her eligibility shall be final.

Date of Birth

Candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 01, 1995 are eligible for HSEE-2020. However, in the case of SC, ST and PwD candidates, upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years, i.e., candidates belonging to SC, ST, and PwD and born on or after October 01, 1990 are eligible. The date of birth as recorded in the High School (10th std./12th Std.) first Board/ Pre-University Certificate will be taken as authentic. Candidates must produce a scanned copy of this certificate along with the completed Application Form as proof of their age and at the time of admission original certificate has to be produced failing which they will be disqualified.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Application for HSEE-2020 is only through online mode. The procedure is given below. Candidate needs access to a computer with Internet connection and a printer.

I.             Registration: Log on to the site http://hsee.iitm.ac.in and select from the menu “Apply Online” and follow the instructions on the site. Enter all the data as per the instructions. The site will prompt to save the data on the system when necessary.

II.            Upload scanned (a) Photograph, (b) Signatures and (c) Supporting Documents:

Photograph: The scanned image of photograph should be in jpg/jpeg format only. The size of the photo image must be greater than 15 kb and less than 40 kb and the dimension of the photo image should be 3.5 cm (width) x 4.5cm (height) only.

Signatures: The scanned images of signature should be in jpg/jpeg format only. The size of the signature image must be greater than 10 kb and less than 30 kb and the dimension of signature image should be 3.5 cm (length) x 1.5 (height) only.

Supporting Documents: Scanned images of 10th Certificate/10+2 certificate (if available)/Date of Birth Certificate/GEN-EWS-Undertaking/OBC-NCL-Undertaking/SC/ ST/PwD category certificate (if applicable) should be in jpg/jpeg format only. After successfully entering the data, click the 'finalize' button. After this, the details cannot be edited.

III.          Examination Fee: Candidates must pay the examination fee as applicable is through Net Banking/Credit Card/Debit Card/Indian Bank challan that will be generated during the process of application. The examination fee for SC, ST, PwD candidates is Rs. 1200/- and for all other candidates it is Rs. 2400/-. Additionally, the service charges of the Bank will be Rs.40/-.

IV.           Payment by Indian Bank e-challan: A bank challan of Indian Bank will be generated during the online process of application. The candidate has to go to any branch of the Indian Bank along with a printed challan and pay the fee. The candidate must verify that the application numbers on both the copies of the challans are the same as that in the application.

Check the challan details at the specified places in the application: Challan No.; Branch Code; Transaction No./Journal No.; Date of Payment. Ensure that the seal of the bank branch and the signature of the banker are affixed on the challan in the space provided.

V.            Payment by Net Banking/Credit Card/Debit Card: The candidate has to select the option to pay the application fee and follow the online instructions to complete the payment. After successful payment, candidate will be able to print the acknowledgement page.

III.          Examination Fee: Candidates must pay the examination fee as applicable is through Net Banking/Credit Card/Debit Card/Indian Bank challan that will be generated during the process of application. The examination fee for SC, ST, PwD candidates is Rs. 1200/- and for all other candidates it is Rs. 2400/-. Additionally, the service charges of the Bank will be Rs.40/-.

IV.           Payment by Indian Bank e-challan: A bank challan of Indian Bank will be generated during the online process of application. The candidate has to go to any branch of the Indian Bank along with a printed challan and pay the fee. The candidate must verify that the application numbers on both the copies of the challans are the same as that in the application.

Check the challan details at the specified places in the application: Challan No.; Branch Code; Transaction No./Journal No.; Date of Payment. Ensure that the seal of the bank branch and the signature of the banker are affixed on the challan in the space provided.

V.            Payment by Net Banking/Credit Card/Debit Card: The candidate has to select the option to pay the application fee and follow the online instructions to complete the payment. After successful payment, candidate will be able to print the acknowledgement page.

The minimum academic qualifications to apply for admission to the MBA program at IIT Madras are as follows:

Ø       Master's degree in Engineering/Technology and preference to those with Master's degree in Ocean Engineering.

Selection Procedure:

Eligible candidates possessing the minimum educational qualifications (as given in section 5,  eligible degree as given in section 6) and satisfying additional and stiffer criteria set by the departments from time to time, will be called for an interview and/or test by the Selection Committees of the respective departments.                         

For candidates who have obtained PG degree 10 years earlier as on the last date prescribed for receipt of the completed application, a departmental test will be conducted.

The applications of foreign nationals may be considered without a personal interview / test (details vide section 8).

Based on the academic record and the performance of the candidates in the interview and/or test, the Departmental Selection Committee will recommend to the Chairman, Senate the names of candidates found suitable for admission to the Ph.D. programme.

Reservation of Seats 

Reservations are applicable to SC/ST/OBC/Persons with Disability (PD) candidates as per Govt. of India rules.

Admission without Assistantship:

A few candidates may also be considered for admission to the PhD /MS Programme without assistantship also (Non-HTRA) under full time (regular) category.

The eligible qualifications are the same as for the Regular (fulltime) HTRA candidates.  

Such candidates have to enclose a letter along with the Application Form stating that they may be considered for admission even without assistantship (Non-HTRA).
