The National Institute of Science and Technology was established in 1996 and is being managed by the SM Charitable Educational Trust with the mission to "create engineering minds capable of mastering the global challenges of tomorrow's technology". The Institute is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE under MHRD, Govt of India) and is affiliated to the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT). The Institute campus of 60 acres is located at the picturesque Palur Hills about 12 kms from Berhampur and 3 hours drive from Bhubaneswar.The Institute has grown by leaps and bounds under the able leadership of the founder Director, Prof. Sangram Mudali, Director (M.S., University of Houston, B. Tech., IIT Kanpur), Prof. (Mrs.) Geetika Mudali, Placement Director, (M.S.(MIS), New Jersey Institute of Technology, NJ), Prof. Ajit K. Panda, Dean, (Boyscast Scholar at University of Michigan, USA).
Admission to the four year degree course leading to Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted each year in May/June by Government of Orissa for admission to the Engineering Colleges of Orissa. Admission to the three year Master in Computer Applications (MCA) is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted each year in May/June by Government of Orissa . The minimum eligibility for appearing in JEE is pass in +3 with Mathematics at +2 level. Reservation for SC/ST, handicapped, Women, Military, and Green Card and outside State Quota is available. Five percent of the total intake is reserved for NRI/In-lieu of NRI quota.

Eligibility Criteria for General Category: Preference will be given to candidates having a valid GATE score. Non-GATE candidates having a minimum of 60% in aggregate OR CGPA of 6.5/10 at B.Tech./B.E level can also apply. Students with B.E/B.Tech in Computer Science, Electronics & Communication Engg. & Electrical Engineering are eligible to apply. Sponsored candidates must have two years of work experience and meet the eligibility criteria mentioned in AICTE circular on "Guidelines for Admission of Sponsored Candidates to Full-Time PG Degree Programmes."
