North-Eastern Hill University is the oldest & the prestigious central University of the region was established in the year 1973 by an Act of Parliament which was notified in the Gazette on 19th July 1973. The University is located in Umshing, a little outside the city limits of Shillong spread across an area of about 1225 acres. Now it is a University of Potential for Excellence for its remarkable achievements. It is also re-accrediated as Grade-A University by NACC.

The objectives of the University, as laid down in the act, are "to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit; to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the hill areas of the North-eastern region, and in particular, the intellectual, academic and cultural advancement".
In a short span of about 35 years NEHU has matured into an institution with a serious academic and social and cultural agenda and a clear vision for its future growth.
